Type-2 diabetes is a lifelong condition which causes the level of sugar in the blood to increase.
It could cause serious long-term health problems, including loss of vision and blindness.
One in 10 people over the age of 40 are living with type-2 diabetes, according to Diabetes UK.
And worryingly, there are almost 1 million people living with the health condition without knowing they have it.
That means, there are a total of 4.7 million with the condition in the UK, but by 2030 it’s expected to rise to 5.5 million.
Here Dr Sarah Brewer, who is on the Medical Advisory board for CuraLin, has shared effective ways to control your blood sugar levels.

1. Keep moving
Sitting for long periods of time is linked with an increase risk of developing type-2 diabetes, as well as heart disease, cancer, obesity and premature death.
Dr Brewer recommends walking at least every 20 to 30 minutes.
Also, try to incorporate exercise into everyday, for example walking to and from work.
She said: “Ultimately, you should walk as much as possible – walk to a local park to eat your healthy packed lunch, brisk walking for at least 30 minutes (and preferably an hour) on most days is ideal.”
2. Avoid stress
When you feel stressed, it can cause the body to go into fight or flight mode.
When this happens, and isn’t followed by physical activity, it could raise glucose levels in the body.
Dr Brewer said: “Whether or not stress can cause type-2 diabetes remains controversial, but if you already have type-2 diabetes, you are likely to notice that both emotional stress and physical stress (e.g. due to an infection such as the common cold) can worsen your glucose control."

3. Limit alcohol
Limiting or ditching alcohol altogether can improve mood, blood sugar levels and weight.
Alcohol is high in calories and carbs, and can also make eating unhealthy foods more tempting. Dr Brewer said: “If this is too much of a struggle, try making healthier changes – when drinking spirits always add a low calorie, or diet, mixer rather than one containing sugar and remember that fruit juice can be high in sugar too.”
4. Consider a vegan diet
Gaining weight around the abdomen can be an indication that your blood sugar levels could be high.
Dr Brewer said: “Consider following a healthy more plant-based diet (low fibre, low-glycaemic index with only healthy carbs such as wholegrains, pulses, fruit and vegetables)”.

5. Join a community
If you or someone you know has diabetes it is an idea to try to manage the mental side as well as the physical side.
Dr Brewer said: “From doctor appointments, to restricting your diet, the restraints and worries of the disease can have a huge effect on your social life.

6. Try a herbal supplement
