NFL, Players Union Agree to Suspend COVID Protocols

The National Football League and the NFL Players Association have agreed to suspend all COVID-19 safety protocols, including mandatory testing, mask mandates, and contact tracing, effective immediately.

However, safety requirements might be imposed depending on local and state rules and if there’s another surge in COVID cases, stated an NFL memo obtained by NFL.com and posted Thursday on Twitter.

Players and team staff members are supposed to monitor themselves and report to team doctors if they have COVID symptoms. Anybody testing positive must isolate five days.

“Based on current encouraging trends regarding the prevalence and severity of COVID-19, the evolving guidance from the CDC, changes to state law and the counsel of our respective experts, the NFL and NFLPA have agreed to suspend all aspects of the joint COVID-19 protocols, effective immediately,” the memo said.

“We will continue to prioritize the health and safety of players, coaches and staff, as we have throughout the pandemic. Should there be a reason to reimpose aspects of the protocols or to take other measures, we will work closely with clubs, the NFLPA and our respective experts, and local, state and federal public health officials to continue to safeguard the health of the NFL community.”

While league activities are at a lull until training camp in the summer, the 2022 NFL Scouting Combine in Indianapolis started Thursday.

Many of the NFL’s most severe protocols were dropped by the end of the 2021 season, including mandatory testing for asymptomatic players, and staff and distancing limitations in weight rooms and cafeterias, ESPN reported.

The league said 95% of players and 100% of team staff members were vaccinated by the end of the 2021 season, ESPN reported.
