Deborah Meaden is the formidable no nonsense businesswoman who has amassed a small fortune thanks in part to her strategic and sharp mind. Deborah turned her business suits into ballroom gowns and delighted audiences with her rhythm and moves in Strictly Come Dancing seven years ago. It was during this time that Deborah began to suffer with chronic pain caused from hours of rehearsals. It’s a pain that has stayed with her still today.
The Dragons’ Den star lasted a total of five weeks in the 2013 show and has been left with constant pain in her feet from the experience.
The pain sometimes became so unbearable for her that she was even forced to have regular steroid injections to help manage the constant aching.
“I still have permanent pain in the balls of my feet, which is a constant reminder that I did the show,” the TV star told Closer magazine.
“It started after I spent ten hours a day waltzing and I put too much pressure on them.
“Everybody is injured in some way (on the show) but now I need to have steroid injections in my feet to keep them supple.”
What are steroid injections and how can they help with pain?
Steroids are a manmade version of hormones normally produced by the adrenal glands, two small glands found above the kidneys, explained the NHS.
The health body continued: “When injected into a joint or muscle, steroids reduce redness and swelling (inflammation) in the nearby area. This can help relieve pain and stiffness.
“When injected into the blood, they can reduce inflammation throughout the body, as well as reduce the activity of the immune system, the body’s natural defence against illness and infection.”
According to the Mayo Clinic, experiencing pain on the ball of your foot is medically known as metatarsalgia.
You might develop it if you participate in activities that involve running and jumping.
There are other causes as well, including foot deformities and shoes that are too tight or too loose.
The NHS added: “Some people also have a foot shape that puts extra pressure on the ball of the foot – for example, if you have small curled-up toes (hammer toes) or high arches.”
Natural way to relieve pain
Rosemary is an essential oil that may relieve pain.
Some researchers state that the rosemary plant may help treat muscle and bone pain, and even seizures.
Rosemary may also reduce inflammation, relax smooth muscles, and boost memory.
The researchers suggest that the herb acts on receptors in the brain called opioid receptors, which are involved with the sensation of pain.
Thankfully Deborah has managed to ease her pain symptoms and takes a more reflective view on life.
She spoke with Wise Living and said: “If I’m facing a tough day, just sitting with my dogs before I set off will calm and centre me and bring down my stress.
“Also, whatever the weather, even if it’s freezing or raining, first thing in the morning I go outside barefoot and just in my dressing gown and walk around the farm,” she says.
“There’s something about starting the day actually touching the world and having nothing between me and the earth is incredibly grounding.”
